Pompeii is still one of the most visited archaeological sites in the world, attracting visitors especially for the rediscovery of the ancient remains of the Roman Empire. The city was destroyed by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D. and it was not until the 18th century that archaeological excavations began, gradually bringing to light the splendours of the past civilisation, such as the fabulous frescoed villas or the majestic amphitheatre.
